In April 2009, Tracy Thompson joined the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University as an Outreach Specialist. Her focus is projects affecting the health of the community.
Tracy formerly served as Director of Public Policy at Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC) in Savannah, Georgia where she helped guide the hospital’s policy decisions and represented the hospital to legislators, the media, philanthropic supporters, and the general public.
Additionally Tracy developed and oversaw the hospital’s community benefits program. This included the development of free clinics, prescription access programs, and behavioral health initiatives as well as the Safety Net Planning Council (SNPC), a collaborative partnership between private, government, and social service entities in Savannah/Chatham County. She represented the hospital on various community boards.
Tracy spent the first 15 years of her career at the National Institutes of Health, both at NIH proper and daughter institutions such as the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. She graduated from the prestigious NIH Management Intern Program in 2002. Prior to leaving NIH, Tracy served as chief of the Center for Cancer Research’s (NCI, NIH) office of communication where she oversaw internal and external communications.
Tracy earned bachelor’s degrees in biology and chemistry from North Carolina State University and has published nearly one dozen articles in journals including Molecular Carcinogenesis, Clinical Advances in Hematology & Oncology, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and Environmental Health Perspectives.
Tracy is originally from North Carolina and lives in the Grand Rapids area with her husband and daughter.
