About Us

The Obesity Interest Group (OIG) promotes multidisciplinary research and outreach in the prevention, recognition, and treatment of obesity. The aim of the OIG is to increase funding opportunities in this area by promoting multidisciplinary collaboration among Michigan State University (MSU) faculty and staff interested in all aspects of obesity prevention. Formed in 2004, the Council is now a well-established campus-wide leadership team that meets regularly and maintains a listserv for all known obesity researchers on campus to communicate research opportunities.

Experts in diverse fields at MSU are making strides in examining the causes, assessment strategies, prevention and management of unhealthy weight among children, adolescents, and adults. The Council supports these efforts by bringing together researchers from across campus and providing networking and learning opportunities that generate new partnerships and research ideas. MSU has a well-established cadre of researchers in clinical medicine, nursing, kinesiology, nutrition, human ecology, land policy and the built environment, agriculture, sociology, and communications.

The Institute for Health Care Studies is providing administrative support to the Council.

To Participate

An ANGEL group has been created composed of faculty, staff, and physicians who are interested in communicating and collaborating with others who do work on obesity issues. If you are interested in joining this ANGEL group, please contact ellio117@msu.edu.

By joining the ANGEL group, you will also be added to the list of "interested colleagues" included on this website as well as the mailing list for all Obesity Council events.

For more information, contact John Hazewinkel, MSU Institute for Health Care Studies.
