Denise Holmes, MS

Associate Dean for Government Relations and Outreach

Denise Holmes currently serves as the Associate Dean for Government Relations and Outreach for the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University. She serves as the Dean’s representative in matters of health policy and legislation and she is the principal CHM contact with Michigan state government in matters related to health, legislation, policy, and programs. Denise also works with the MSU Colleges of Nursing and Osteopathic Medicine.

Denise serves as the Director of the Institute for Health Care Studies within the College of Human Medicine. As Director of the Institute, she oversees an organization that provides research, policy analysis, education, and quality improvement assistance to state government and health care organizations throughout Michigan.

Currently, she is chairing the Finance Committee of the Detroit/Wayne County Health Authority and she serves on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Public Health Institute, Grand Rapids Medical Education & Research Center and Synergy Medical Education Alliance.

Formerly, Denise was the Director of the Bureau of Policy and Federal Affairs, Michigan Department of Community Health. In this position, she was responsible for the operational policy of the Medicaid program.

Over the last several years, Denise has organized many state-wide task forces and policy committees that have examined critical issues including infant mortality and definition of the responsibilities and relationships between state and local government in the assessment, policy, and assurance functions in health. She served on numerous state and national committees and organizations including the National Academy for State Health Policy. She worked as a public health nutritionist at one of Michigan’s local health departments and taught nutrition at Albion College for four years.

Denise is a native of Michigan, born in Detroit. She holds a master’s degree in nutrition from Michigan State University, and she resides in DeWitt, Michigan.
